Whether you live in Bangkok or are here for a week, sexual health testing has to fit around everything else: work, sightseeing, a packed schedule, or simply wanting to keep it private. STI testing at home is an alternative to sitting in a clinic waiting room. A doctor comes to your home, condo, hotel or office, takes the samples, and sends them to the laboratory. This guide explains how an at home STD test works with Ovio's STI testing, and what to check before you book.
Is STI Testing at Home or in Hotels Available in Bangkok?
Yes. Ovio offers STI testing at home and in hotels across Bangkok, so you can have samples taken wherever suits you. It's particularly useful if you're staying in a hotel, working long hours, visiting for a short time, or would rather be tested somewhere familiar and private.
It's worth being clear what "at home" means here. This isn't a self-test kit posted to you: a doctor takes the samples, and they're tested in a laboratory with the same methods a clinic uses. That means you can have the full range of tests, including blood tests, and someone to ask questions face to face.
Where the service covers
Visits cover homes, condos, hotels and offices across Bangkok. When you get in touch, give your address or hotel name so the team can confirm the visit. If you're an international visitor, you can arrange it before you arrive.
Choosing a Time and Place for Your Home STI Test
When you book, it helps to have ready:
- Your location: a home address, or a hotel name and address, in Bangkok.
- Your preferred time: a date and time that suits you, and a back-up.
- The tests you want: if you know them. If not, the team will help you choose.
- The date of the exposure: so the tests can be timed to their window periods.
- Contact details: so the team can confirm the appointment.
For hotel visits, mention anything the doctor needs to reach your room, for example whether reception needs your name or the doctor should call when they arrive.
How STI Testing at Home Works: 6 Steps
Choose your tests. Start from what happened and whether you have symptoms. Blood tests screen for HIV and syphilis; urine tests or swabs find chlamydia and gonorrhoea. A large package isn't always the right one: our STI testing checklist helps you choose.
Book the visit. Message or call Ovio with the tests you want, your address and a preferred time. Ask about the total cost before you confirm.
Prepare. Most STI blood tests need no fasting. For a urine test, avoid passing urine for at least an hour before the visit. Follow the instructions you're given for your tests.
The doctor visits. At the agreed time, a doctor comes to you and takes the samples for your tests: blood from a vein, a first-catch urine sample, or swabs. The doctor explains each step, and you can ask anything.
Laboratory testing. The samples are labelled and taken to the laboratory, which uses the right method for each infection: antibody and antigen tests on blood, and PCR on urine and swabs.
Your results. Results come to you directly. If a result is positive, unclear or needs confirming, a doctor explains what it means and what to do next.
Cost. You pay for the tests you choose, plus ฿1,500 for a home or hotel visit when tests are booked on their own. See STI test prices and packages.
What Samples Are Taken During STI Testing at Home?
The sample depends on the infection being tested:
- Blood: for HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B and C, and herpes antibodies.
- Urine (first-catch): for chlamydia and gonorrhoea, and some other infections, using PCR.
- Swabs: from the vagina, throat or rectum, depending on the type of sex you've had.
A blood test alone can't find every STI. After oral or anal sex, for example, chlamydia and gonorrhoea need a throat or rectal swab. Our guide to STI blood tests vs urine tests vs swabs explains what each sample detects.
Is STI Testing at Home Private?
Testing at home or in your hotel means no waiting room and nobody seeing you walk into a sexual health clinic. But private isn't the same as anonymous: as with any medical test, the provider needs to know who you are to label your samples correctly and give you your results.
Before you book any home STI test, it's reasonable to ask how your identity is checked, what's recorded, who can see your results, and how they'll reach you. Ovio's Privacy Policy explains how personal information is handled. For the difference between the two, read anonymous vs private STI testing in Bangkok.
Important Things to Know Before Booking
- Check the window period. Infections aren't detectable straight after exposure. A laboratory HIV antigen/antibody test usually detects HIV 18 to 45 days after exposure, and chlamydia and gonorrhoea tests are reliable from 2 weeks. If you test earlier, plan a repeat test. See the STI window periods guide.
- Ask about preparation. Most tests need none, but urine tests work best if you haven't passed urine for an hour.
- Say which sites were exposed. Genital, oral and anal sex each need the right sample, so the doctor knows whether to take throat or rectal swabs.
- Don't wait if it's urgent. If you have severe symptoms, or might have been exposed to HIV in the last 72 hours, see a doctor or go to a hospital emergency department today. Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) works best the sooner it's started.
Arrange STI Testing at Home in Bangkok
STI testing at home gives you the same tests as a clinic, on your schedule and in your own space. The essentials don't change: choose the right tests, take the right samples, test at the right time, and know how your results will reach you. Get in touch with Ovio with your address, the tests you're considering and the date of the exposure, and the team will confirm the visit.
Private STI testing in Bangkok
Ovio can arrange private STI testing at a location that works for you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get an STI test in my hotel room in Bangkok?
Yes. Ovio's doctors visit hotels across Bangkok as well as homes, condos and offices. Give the hotel name and address when you book.
Is an at home STD test as accurate as a clinic test?
Yes, when the samples are taken by a doctor and tested in a laboratory, as with Ovio. Accuracy depends on the test method, the right sample site and the timing, not on where the sample is taken.
Which STI tests can be done at home?
Blood tests for HIV, syphilis and hepatitis B and C, and urine or swab PCR tests for chlamydia, gonorrhoea and other infections. Herpes swabs need an active sore.
Do I need to prepare for an at-home STI test?
Usually only for urine tests: don't pass urine for at least an hour before. STI blood tests don't need fasting.
