HIV Statistics in Thailand

Explore the latest available data on HIV in Thailand: how many people are living with HIV, new infections, AIDS-related deaths, treatment coverage and how these have changed since 1984. Ovio presents official figures from Thailand's Department of Disease Control and cites every source.

These are official model-based estimates and treatment records, not a count of everyone diagnosed. They describe the population as a whole and say nothing about any one person's status. The latest year of estimates is 2024.

Headline figures

What the latest HIV data shows

Each observation is worked out from the published figures on this page. “Ovio calculation” marks a percentage or ratio that the source does not publish itself.

  1. Estimated new HIV infections fell from a peak of 170,805 in 1991 to 18,112 in 2010 and 8,124 in 2024: -95.2% from the peak and -55.1% from 2010 (Ovio calculation). Thailand's national strategy sets a goal of no more than 1,000 new infections a year by 2030.
  2. Estimated AIDS-related deaths were 9,067 in 2024, compared with 9,936 in 2023 (-8.7%, Ovio calculation) and a peak of 66,417 in 2002. The 2024 estimate carries a wide range (6,400 to 13,000), so a one-year change of this size is smaller than the uncertainty. The national strategy also sets a goal of no more than 4,000 deaths a year among people with HIV by 2030.
  3. An estimated 565,598 people were living with HIV in 2024, against a peak of 936,201 in 1998. The estimate for 2023 was 570,466. This total includes everyone living with HIV, including people on long-term treatment, so it changes more slowly than the number of new infections in a year.
  4. In 2024, 95.5% of people estimated to be living with HIV knew their status, 92% of those were on treatment, and 98% of those on treatment were virally suppressed. Each figure is a share of the step before it, as published, so they cannot be multiplied into a single "of everyone" figure without care.
  5. Of the estimated 8,124 new infections in 2024, 48.7% were in people aged 15 to 24 and 78.8% were in males (both Ovio calculations from the published breakdowns).

Understanding the numbers

These terms are easy to mix up, and mixing them up changes what a number means.

People living with HIV
Everyone estimated to have HIV at a point in time, whether or not they have been diagnosed. It is modelled, not counted, so it comes with an uncertainty range.
New HIV infections
People estimated to have acquired HIV during a year. This is different from new HIV diagnoses, which count people who were tested and found to have HIV and may have been infected years earlier. This page shows infections, not diagnoses.
HIV prevalence
The share of a population living with HIV (for example, people aged 15 to 49). It is a rate, not a number of people. This page shows numbers of people; it does not publish a prevalence figure, so none is calculated.
HIV diagnosis / knowing your status
Having been tested, and having received a positive result. The treatment chart's first bar is the share of people estimated to be living with HIV who have been diagnosed.
AIDS-related deaths
Estimated deaths among people with HIV attributed to AIDS-related causes. It is not the same as deaths among all people with HIV from any cause.
ART (antiretroviral therapy)
Daily HIV medicine. People on ART are counted from health service records.
Viral suppression
Having so little virus in the blood that it is at or below a set level. Here the source uses a viral load below 1,000 copies/mL. Suppression on treatment is the third step of the 95-95-95 targets.
Estimate range
The interval the source gives around an estimate. A different number inside the range is equally consistent with the evidence.

SOURCES AND METHODOLOGY

Where the data comes from, and how it was handled.

Ovio did not collect or produce these statistics. They are published by Thailand's Department of Disease Control; Ovio reads them, converts them to a consistent format, draws the charts and makes a small number of clearly labelled calculations.

How the data was processed

  • Values are taken as published from the hub's public data feeds on 2026-09-20, unchanged.
  • Years given in the Buddhist Era are converted to Gregorian years by subtracting 543.
  • Where the source publishes an uncertainty range, it is shown on the estimate it belongs to and nowhere else.
  • A missing value stays missing (n/a). It is never shown as zero.
  • Ovio's calculations are limited to percentage changes and shares of published totals, and are always labelled.

Calculations made by Ovio

Anything calculated by Ovio (not published by the source) is labelled “Ovio calculation” where it appears.

  • Percentage change: (later value - earlier value) / earlier value x 100, using the published values.
  • Share of a total: one published value divided by the sum of the published age or sex values, times 100.
  • Treatment as a share of the estimate: people on ART (495,813, service data) divided by the estimated number of people living with HIV (565,598). The source publishes the same ratio as its "ART coverage".

Limitations

  • Estimates are modelled and uncertain; they will be revised when the model is updated, and earlier years can change with them.
  • Years after 2024 in the source model are projections. They are deliberately not shown as data.
  • The treatment chart mixes a model estimate (first denominator) with service records. Denominators in earlier years are those used in the source's cascade for that year and can differ slightly from the current model series in the first chart.
  • The source also lists a 2025 column for the treatment cascade. It is not shown here because it uses a different estimate of people living with HIV from the model used elsewhere on this page, and its treatment count is lower than 2024's, which suggests an incomplete year.
  • Province-level HIV data is not shown: the source's provincial figures are not clearly defined in the extract Ovio reviewed, so they were left out rather than guessed at.
  • National figures hide large differences between groups and places. Nothing here says who is at risk in a given situation.

Revisions

Official statistics are revised. If the source changes a historical figure, Ovio updates this page from the source and does not keep older values silently. The “data as of” date of the source and the date Ovio read it are both shown above.
