Q. Are there any side effects to taking olive leaf extract?

A: It is generally agreed that olive leaf extract does not produce adverse side effects. Some people may experience what is known as ‘Herxheimers Effect’ or healing effect, which may give the feeling that symptoms are temporarily getting slightly worse. This is due to a detoxification reaction to the olive leaf killing a large number of harmful germs quickly. If this should happen, decrease your measurements by half for three to four days and drink plenty of water.

Q. What does olive leaf extract do?

A: Olive leaf extract works at the cellular level to measurably strengthen the body’s immune response.

Q. Does olive leaf extract contain antioxidants?

A: Yes, studies show that the olive leaf contains some of the most powerful antioxidants found in nature. When the human body converts oxygen into energy, free radicals are formed as natural by-products of this process, the overproduction of which cause damage to the body. Antioxidants “scavenge” the free radicals in our bodies so that they don’t promote too much oxidation, which can harm the walls and structure of cells, damage the genetic material inside a cell, and cause many serious diseases.

Q. How does olive leaf extract impact free radicals?

A: Free radicals are bad; they are the by-products of cell oxidation and they can leave the body vulnerable to advanced aging, cardiovascular problems and degenerative diseases. They can be caused by many factors: sun exposure, pollution, stress, a poor diet, alcohol and smoke. The high antioxidant qualities of olive leaf extract have been shown to “scavenge” free radicals even more than vitamin C, green tea and grape seed extract.

Q. What antioxidants are present in olive leaf extract?

A: The most active identified so far include: Hydroxytyrosol, Oleuropein and Tyrosol.

The key to olive leaf extract is a phytochemical compound called oleuropein from the leavesofolive trees. Oleuropein is the major phenolic constituent of the olive leaf (Olea europaea) and it is also present in olive oil and fruit. It has a powerful anti-bacterial and anti-viral effect, and has been proven to be potentially useful in cases of yeast and fungal infections, herpes, chronic fatigue, allergies, psoriasis and many other pathogens.

Hydroxytyrosol

Hydroxytyrosol is believed to be one of the most powerful antioxidants. Its oxygen radical absorbance capacity is ten times higher than green tea. The antioxidant polyphenolis known for its activity in preventing or reducing the harmful effects of oxygen-derived free radicals associated with numerous inflammatory and stress-related diseases. Research suggests that it is also effective at inhibiting the LDL oxidation associated with atherosclerosis.

Tyrosol

Tyrosol is a phenolic antioxidant, and can protect cells against injury due to oxidation. Its good bioavailability indicates that it may have an important overall effect. This effect may contribute significantly to the health benefits of the Mediterranean diet.

Q. Does olive leaf extract boost energy levels?

A: One of the most frequent comments we hear from customers after they start taking olive leaf is that they feel more energetic and have a greater sense of well-being. Some people are energized to the point that they inquire whether there is an ‘upper’ in the product. There isn’t – it simply generates a natural ‘upper’ effect. Healthy people who take it say they also feel this infusion of energy, without caffeine.

Q. How can olive leaf extract boost the immune system?

A: Your immune system is your armour, protecting you from many diseases and infections. When the immune system is working properly you do not suffer very long from colds, flu and hundreds of other diseases. Symptoms of a weakened immune system include allergies, digestive problems, fatigue, joint problems, poor appetite, congestion, respiratory problems, rashes, insomnia and muscle weakness. Our bodies don’t build up a resistance to olive leaf, (as is the case with antibiotics), additionally olive leaf kills viruses, fungi and parasites, as well as bacteria (antibiotics only kill bacteria).

Once the immune system is over-burdened with some type of pathogen (virus, fungi, yeast, bacteria, parasites), disease takes a foothold and sometimes it takes months and even years to manifest itself. In the meantime, the pathogens are in your body draining strength from all your other important functions.

Olive leaf extract does not cure diseases, though it is a ferocious killer of most pathogens (disease-causing agents). Additionally, the antioxidants present in OVIO Organic Olive Leaf Infusion with Calendula protects our immune cells from free radical damage Once the pathogens have been stunned or killed off, the immune system can rebuild itself and cure the disease or get rid of the symptoms.
